The South Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association Serves South Carolina ALS Patients and Their Families by Providing…
Counseling
Sometimes just talking to someone who is familiar with ALS and the challenges faced by families can help. Our patient services staff is experienced in dealing with care giving issues, common questions by Persons with ALS, governmental programs …and listening.
Support Groups
The Chapter currently sponsors six Resource/ Support Groups in South Carolina: Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg. We also offer a call-in support group.
Loaner Library (books, videos)
We will provide videos and manuals from the “Living With” series. The library is currently being stocked with other ‘loaner’ items and we hope to provide a list in the near future. Ask to be included on the quarterly newsletter mailing list.
Respite Care Grant Program
This program is designed to help families meet the high costs of outside help. A caregiver or patient may apply up to four times a year for a $500.00 grant equaling a maximum of $2000.00 per year.
Transportation Grant Program
This program helps families who may encounter high expenses incurred due to special travel needs for those with ALS. Coverage includes gas expenses, van rental, driver charges, hotel charges if needed to stay overnight for a clinic visit, and other transportation costs that wouldn’t have been incurred without an ALS diagnosis. The grant is available four times a year for $250.00 equaling a maximum grant of $1000.00 per year.
Durable Medical Equipment Loaner Program
The South Carolina Chapter has an extensive growing “closet” of supportive equipment needed at times by families dealing with ALS. This includes power wheel chairs, walkers, and scooters, among other things. While the current closet is housed in Columbia, SC, we will ship any item needed to any location at no cost to the family.
